This goal is achieved by the fact that according to the method of coating steel pipes with a welded seam, consisting in applying a surface layer of thermoplastic plastic in the form of a hose or tape on the outer surface of a steel pipe with a pre-applied adhesive substance and applying a protective strip of thermoplastic plastics after the application of the surface layer is carried out by extrusion, the application of a protective strip consisting of the same thermoplastic plastic with the surface layer, moreover, the surface layer at the site of the weld before heating the protective strip is heated to the softening temperature. In addition, the heating of the surface layer and the application of the protective strip are carried out continuously. In a device for carrying out the method comprising a device for installing a steel pipe with a surface layer of thermoplastic plastic and a device for applying a protective strip of thermoplastic plastic placed above the steel pipe, a device for applying a protective strip M made in the form of an extruder, dies which is directed to the welded seam of the steel pipe, and the device is equipped with a hot air blower and the heating of the surface layer in the weld: the seam located in front of the spinneret and with sprinkler cooling with water mounted behind the spinneret. The inlet pipes 11 and 12 are designed for granulated thermoplastic plastic-polyethylene and cooling water. On the supporting beam 3, pressure cylinders 13 are installed, the pistons of which act on the supporting plate 4 and press the devices fixed on it to the upper line of the pipe. The contact element 9 is electrically connected with the mechanism 2 for turning the steel pipe or with the nozzle b to adjust its position (not shown in the drawing). The method is carried out as follows. To coat the weld seam 14, the steel pipe 15 with the surface layer is moved in the direction of the arrow. In this case, the applied layer of polyethylene is heated by the hot air blower 7 at the weld section 14 to the softening temperature and immediately after this, a polyethylene film is applied as an encapsulated layer to the softened layer by the die 6 on the extruder 5. Then the sprinkler 8 quickly cools the soft layer. The contact element 9 of the weld seam 14 is electrically connected to the mechanism 2 for turning the steel pipe 15 through a control device (not shown) and provides accurate longitudinal movement of the welded seam 14 under the hot air blower 7, the die 6 of the extruder 5 and the sprinkler 8.
